Offloading bonds during their darkest hour is probably a mistake. Swearing off them for life is probably a mistake. Falling prices have certainly inflicted a short-term defeat on most bond funds. But lower prices equate to higher yields. That’s bond maths 101.
But even with individual bonds, the APY seems to be less than that of CDs. According to my brokerage, 1 year CDs provide a higher APY than 1 year treasuries, 1 year AAA/AA corporates, and 1 year munis. The same is true for 3 year CDs. It seems to me that investing in CDs is smarter than investing in bonds when it comes to retirement. There is a .15-.25% management fee, on top of your typical fund/ETF fees. So if u stuck everything in SPY500 yourself you pay .05% of all invested money that year.
