Ensure the waste drawer liner is properly installed and tucked into all 4 tabs. Perform a hard reset after emptying the waste drawer: Unplug Litter-Robot for 10 seconds and replug. Turned out that the DFI board (the two PCBs on either side of the opening) was busted. You can order a new DFI kit for $80 off the litter robot website.
