Infantry only is perfectly viable provided you make sure you keep enough mounts in your inventory to keep your speed up, too many will slow you down so about 1 per soldier does the trick. The best army combination, at least in my opinion, is as follows: 50% Swadian Knights. 25% Rhodok Sharpshooters. 25% Nord Huscarls. This allows for multiple strategies. My typical one is to let my Nords sit five paces in front of my Rhodoks, who are five in front of my Swadians.Battania. Vlandia. Sturgia. Aserai. Khuzait Khanate. Vlandia is my current choice because the mercenary mechanic was fin to try, the castle perk is good for an early kingdom and the debuff is currently a buff.

Sturgia is good, but there's a few key things to note about them. As others have said, the archer line is too inferior. With battanian fians so close by, it's easy to selectively go around scooping them up off battanian castles. The sturgian varags, spearmen, and line breakers are a magnificent infantry line up. Spearman is Heavy Spearman or Darkhan. Aserai Veteran infantry have a niche as a spearman with throwing option for excellent <T5 sweeping. Throwing shield infantry is heavy axeman or wildlings, axeman are tankier and do better in melee. Shock troop is context dependent, but fians and khans guard are in the same pool so its weird. Heavy axemen are a great bane of Khuzait cavalry and horse archers. Battles won't be pretty and they won't be fun, but if you form your axemen up into a circle, their shields and armor will let them weather all the arrows that horse archers can throw at them.
