I would guess by the serial that the gun does not have a trigger guard screw (front of the trigger guard). S&W has made millions of them (still in production) starting in 1899. I say early 1982 because later the same year, serial numbers went to a 3 letter prefix on all S&W revolvers. Since your gun has a 2-1/2" barrel it is also a "round butt" frame with a smaller grip to make the gun more concealable.
