John deere 4020 problems.

I push the starter button and I hear the starter motor turning but the bendix does not engage the flywheel... or it is every so slightly engaging that it doesn't even sound like it's grinding.

The problem is there is no current from key switch to starter button. All four posts on solenoid show 24v all the time, and the starter button has power coming to it …Clean the elbow. After doing some more checking, it became obvious that there still had to be a resistor in the circuit of the generator light.

My new 4020 has some hydraulic issues. The steering and brakes work good, but the remotes are very slow and will barely lift anything. First I checked the priority valve to see if it was stuck, but it was moving fine. Then we pulled the stroke control valve, which was stuck. The ignition switch on my 64 model 4020 has a white ceramic resistor built on the rear of the ignition switch. You would see a white ceramic tube like thing sticking out the rear of the switch. All cracked/popped adequately, however, 2 of the injectors test pattern was not real good if pressure was added slowly so I replaced them. This did not cure the miss.
#1. 4020 synchro has a dry clutch and the tranny is not particularly notorious for jumping out of fear under ANY conditions unless badly worn. Powershift still has a dry clutch at the flywheel, a "torque limiter", and in the earlier serial numbers it can be disengaged with a separate little lever to make cold weather starting easier.1964 JD 4020. But the 4020, 4230, etc. use large-frame starters the larger starter-solenoid can sometimes draw - or surge close to 20 amps. When hooked directly to a standard ignition switch or push-button - that gets a little worn - it can cause a problem. Using the extra relay in-between takes the load off the ignition switch. Thats usually a linkage issue. Ours do it also. Usually if u go to reverse then back forward it will completley come out of park. Not saying it cant happen but the 4020 is a very well built tractor and the powershift transmission in it is practically indestructible.
