You can plug your own router into the ONT but they insist on the ONT terminating the fiber. It makes sense honestly. I have a UDMP with a copper SFP+ interface connected to our ONT. Cloned the MAC from their provided router. Works fine. If you are curious - the ONT does more than a simple media converter.

Fidium uses the XGSPON network. I’ve worked on both adtran networks. To the OP the ONT/OLT uses time division multiplexing of the light and needs time to sync. The ONT also has a lot of management features for the operator of the network.If I remember correctly that is where Adtran limits your speed that you purchased.
