Borderlands is one of my favorite games, and still my favorite game in the series. I'm excited for you! Lilith really is a beast, and her skill tree is super versatile. Running an smg and focusing on her elemental tree is a good way to go OP later in the game. Mind games is a nice skill to have. Other than reaching that skill (Diva, Girl Power and that shark-icon skill), Slayer and everything below it is nice (except the final skill in that tree; it's bugged and sucks). Quicksilver is also handy. This is a general build that will help you with any weapon you use, be it pistols, rifles or SMGs.
I think it makes the game better. Thats what its all about is making a build that can destroy your enemies and keep you alive. Lilith just makes this goal easier. I would use a Firefly Class Mod with a Hellfire. So much death especially with Pheonix. My build is very similar to yours. If you choose Mordecai, get to the bottom of the left tree asap as it will allow you to ignore shields completely. Roland can also be deadly with the right build. All in all, I would say go with whatever is appealing to you because any character can be OP with the right build. Lilith is all around good, and places more emphasis on the elemental system than the other characters. That said, you also have phasewalk and SMGs if you want to go in a different direction. Spend points in increasing your shield capacity, damage caused by weapons, accuracy etc. You can experiment. Once you have spent skill points, tried it out and not liked the result - just respec.HTH.
