Seems like you cannot gather ORCHIDS in one go. You can with plumes though. I had 25 Heron plumes while I was still in part 1 of the side quest. I guess the game prevents you from collecting things in advance because I think picking the last item you need is a trigger to change the state of the quest from “In Progress” -> “Completed”
